Gaining Familiarity with Home Elevator Interlock Operation

When planning your home elevator, there are a few features that you may not have encountered previously. Some things work exactly as they do in a commercial elevator, while others are quite different. As you complete your project, it is important to understand all of the controls and features of your elevator.

What is a Residential Elevator Door Interlock?

You may have seen an elevator interlock previously and simply not known what it is. A residential electro-mechanical door interlock  is mounted on the frame of the hoistway door and ensures the door to the elevator is safely closed before the elevator can be operated. The interlock also prevents the door from being opened when it is not safe to do so. An interlock is primarily intended for swing door applications.

In the case of an emergency, trained individuals may need to use a special key to provide emergency personnel with access to the elevator. The interlock is a critical safety feature of your elevator. Outside of emergency situations, the need for you to interfere with its function is rare.

Customization of the Interlock

The standard interlock provided is typically an EMDL Interlock, with a cover made a durable white plastic. While this suits some applications well, you may want to consider upgrading your interlock cover. Additional covers are typically available in a variety of finishes including stainless steel or powder-coated metal. Each manufacturer’s offerings are slightly different, so if this is something that interests you, make sure you add it to your personal residential elevator planning checklist.

Finishing Your Project

As you are ready to undertake the planning and installation of your residential elevator, it is best to determine which home elevator company you are going to work with. A local representative will work with you to customize your elevator and ensure you are  comfortable with the operation of all of its features.
